Dr House Buys A House
July 9th, 2008 10:33 AM

Hughlaurie

British actor Hugh Laurie has purchased a home in Outpost Estates in Los Angeles for $3,840,000, according to the Real Estalker. Best known as Dr. House on the Fox medical drama House M.D., we’ve heard various rumors of trouble with his wife, probably due to the long hours on the set. Oh, and the fact that said wife still lives in England. Details. But this new purchase is 5 bedrooms and 4 baths, which sounds like he might be planning to move the family across the pond.

The listing, which has been removed from MLS, describes the property as follows: MAGICAL GARDEN PARADISE ON OVER 1.2 ACRES. Walled, gated, English Country house with city views, pool, guest house w spectacular gardens in the Hollywood Hills. Mature planting, thrilling trails, lookouts, water features & arcadian delights with magnificent city views. A private paradise, lge motorcourt to accommodate many cars. Lovely public rooms, recently remodeled kitchen, formal dining. Master bedroom w balcony, views. Det. gym. Charming gst hse w bathroom by pool. It was priced at $3,999,000 after a $250,000 reduction sometime earlier this year.

The house definitely has a countryside feel to it, including the kitchen. This makes us weep just a little. A country kitchen doesn’t have to be so inconveniently designed. While the picture isn’t great, it doesn’t seem like a good use of space most people who like to, I don’t know, actually cook in their kitchen.

And we hate to harp, but once again with the neutral colors. Wait, there’s one room with a nice sage paint on the walls. Thank gawd. We are so sick of stagers and real estate agents who feel that a house must be boring to sell. And we don’t understand why buyers can’t get over the fact that they may have to paint when they move in. We’re not asking for blood-red walls that are a bitch to paint over. No, just something more than white, off-white, beige, eggshell, ecru, and white. Please, people! Ahem.

The views from the back of the property are quite stunning. And the pool looks like a delight for those warm July and August days. But this lot is on a hill and there is quite the hike to the pool, children. Even though the previous owners did do a little updating, the house still needs some more. Especially that kitchen and back deck. You can see pictures here.

Cary Grant's Palm Springs Estate For Sale.
July 16th, 2008 10:03 AM

Lg 928-Avenida-Palmas2The great movie legends are what made me fall in love with the big screen. And one of the greatest was Cary Grant. His Palm Springs home is for sale. Talk about a piece of movie history. This 6 bedroom, 5 1/2 bath home was his retreat for 20 years. Built in 1927, this 6,000 square foot home has hit the market at $4,995,000.

The home is in the Movie Colony of Palm Springs. It’s a replica of a Spanish farmhouse. This baby has 5 fireplaces, guest wings, a studio, two driveways, and is walled and gated. Of course, you can see the beautiful pool in the pics. Who wouldn’t want a pool in Palm Springs?

There aren’t many of these 1920s Spanish-style homes left in Palm Springs. That’s too bad, because they really are a piece of the area’s history. Wood floors, tile, exposed celling beams add to the feel of the house. We’re not a big fan of some of the details, which remind us more of a Southwest decor rather than Andalusian Spanish, as the listing touts. Details! It looks like, in some pics, an old Western movie set. But, we’re not the Spanish colonial connoisseur who restored the place, now are we? (Really, it’s only a few of the details that strike us as odd - not the entire place.)

Still, it is a great part of movie history. Who doesn’t remember all of the stories about Cary Grant? Who hasn’t seen some of his movies? That paints a little more rose-colored view of the house, doesn’t it?

I always dreamed about owning an estate in Palm Springs. It has always held such a glamorous sheen in my mind. So hop to it, children! At just under $5 million, this 1.5 acre place probably won’t last.

Matthew Perry strikes again
July 15th, 2008 9:59 AM

MatthewperrysmokingOh, that coy, sly ex-Friend Matthew Perry has done it again. He just keeps snapping up property left and right. His newest venture? A house on Canton Drive in Studio City.

The 1,701 square-foot, three bedroom, two bath home was listed at $899,900, but Mr. Big Time reports the sale at $883,000. The listing boasts a location south of Ventura Blvd, but just minutes from the Westside.

Also in the home, according to the listing, is a big kitchen with Italian tile floors. We can’t tell how dated the kitchen is, but by the size of the stove, we’d say this kitchen is older. Parts of it may just be original 1950s.

In pictures, we can clearly see hardwood floors throughout the house. And there’s a cute little kidney-shaped pool in the back. One that the neighbors on the nearby hill can see perfectly through the shrubbery.

So we wonder, what does he plan with this house? A longer-term investment? A flip? We’ll be waiting to find out.

Nicole Kidman Buys In Beverley Hills.
July 13th, 2008 7:41 AM

08-273577 1Actress Nicole Kidman has finally purchased in California again, buying a home for an undisclosed price in the Beverly Hills PO district. Mr. Big Time caught the exclusive, but he didn’t mention Kidman’s hubby, country crooner Keith Urban as being one of the purchasers. We’re not sure if they purchased it together or whether this was Kidman’s investment.

The 5 befroom, 4 1/4 bath home was listed at $4,795,000. At 4,141 square feet, according to listing information, the home should be plenty big to hold the couple and their new baby daughter, and Kidman’s children with Tom Cruise. The listing also notes a full-floor master suite with walk-in closets, fancypants bathroom, and a sitting area/office. There’s a pool, of course, outdoor dining, a play area and a piece of land across the street, too.

From the pics, it appears that the top floor master suite also has a walk-out balcony that overlooks the pool. It also has a fireplace in the middle of the room, separating the sleeping area from the office area.

There are lots of shelves and vases in the master bedroom, and on the stair landing outside the bedroom. The person that decorated really loved vases. Lots and lots of oddly-shaped vases.

One room in the pics looks like it could be an office. It has a desk and a huge bookshelf. We love having room for our books, but there’s something about that shelf that is overpowering the room. Maybe it’s the color contrast between it and the wall. Not sure.

The kitchen, with its cabinets on spindly little legs, has a total retro feel to it. Not sure if we like - can’t decide. It’s a nice house overall, but could use some updates here and there.
